Two Square Miles Principal Crew

Barbara Ettinger, Director/Producer

Barbara Ettinger lives in Germantown, NY, 10 miles outside of Hudson. Two Square Miles is Barbara's second feature documentary. Her first, Martha and Ethel, told the heartfelt story of two women and their childhood nannies. It competed at the 1994 Sundance Film Festival; screened at the Toronto Film Festival, and won Best Documentary at the Hamptons International Film Festival. Martha and Ethel was purchased by Sony Pictures Classics for national and international theatrical release, and was shown nationally on Cinemax. She received a Bachelor of Arts at Manhattanville College, completed the certificate program at the International Center for Photography, where she studied documentary and portrait photography, and was awarded a Master of Arts from Stanford University in education. After co-founding the Native American Preparatory School in New Mexico, she returned to her home in upstate New York.

Sven Huseby, Producer

A retired independent school head, Sven Huseby works with environmental justice issues. He is especially involved in helping non-profits to build organizational capacity and plan for the long term. As someone with many years of experience in development work, he has focused on finding funding for Two Square Miles. He is married to Barbara Ettinger and he is a graduate of Yale College.

Joseph Friedman, Cinematographer

Joseph Friedman chose a career in filmmaking because of his love for documentaries and his fascination with the real world. One of his earliest assignments as cinematographer was "We're Not the Jet Set", an unromantic and candid view of a Nebraska farm and ranching family that was produced and directed by Robert Duvall. He shot Duvall's second feature, "Angelo My Love", with New York Gypsies in a fictional story. His work with Barbara on the highly acclaimed documentary, "Martha and Ethel", was the start of a collaboration that would continue for more than a decade. He has shot numerous documentaries and docu-dramas which have appeared on HBO, The Discovery Channel, PBS and NBC. He resides on the Upper West Side of Manhattan with his wife, Jeanne and his Norwich Terrier, Monty.

Toby Shimin, Editor

Toby Shimin is an Emmy-nominated documentary editor with over 20 years of experience. She last worked with Ms. Ettinger on Martha and Ethel. Her recent projects include PBS' Reporting America at War and Three of Hearts: a post-modern family, which will be released theatrically by THINKfilm and will air on Bravo. She has edited many diverse projects including The Children's Storefront, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Short Subject Documentary, AIDS Warriors for the 2003 season of Wide Angle, and Seabiscuit for American Experience. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in film from Hampshire College.

Stephen Sheehan, Sound Designer

Ben Kalina, Associate Producer, 2nd Cinematographer

Formerly the managing director of a community-based media literacy and media production organization, and currently an independent filmmaker and student, Ben Kalina has had a varied career since graduating with a BA from Vassar College. In addition to producing short subject documentaries he has worked extensively both as a grant-writer and as a teacher. His first feature-length production, "Leaps of Faith", co-directed by Andrew Davison and produced in 2004, was an observational documentary focusing on the perspectives of ordinary passers-by on the street during the first year of war in Iraq. He is pursuing his MFA in Film and Media Arts at Temple University in Philadelphia.

Beth Poague, Associate Editor and Associate Producer

Beth Poague was an assistant editor for the 2-part PBS documentary Reporting America at War and associate editor for Three of Hearts: a postmodern family, which will be released theatrically in the fall of 2005 and air on Bravo in 2006. Before working in documentary film, she was a program and development consultant for foundations, nonprofit organizations and individuals in the arts and was Executive Director of No Name Exhibitions at the Soap Factory, a nonprofit gallery for emerging artists in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She has a degree in Nonprofit Management from the University of St. Thomas and a BA in Psychology from the University of Minnesota.

Joy Reed, Second Camera

Joy E. Reed is an emerging independent filmmaker & multimedia artist. Her short film, "I've Met a Wonderful Man" screened in 2006 at Filmstock International Film Festival in the United Kingdom, the Kent Film Festival in Kent, CT, and the Provincetown International Film Festival in Cape Cod. Her multimedia work has been seen at ArtWalk, Poughkeepsie, and the Museum of Natural History in NYC. Her current projects include video design for "The Exodus Project," a multimedia theatrical performance based on the story of Moses, and directing and producing "52 Men Coming Together - the story of Hot Nude Yoga (Working Title)," a feature length documentary about media awareness and a group of gay men in NYC who find a sense of community and spirituality through the practice of yoga while unclothed.
